Introduction to Bison


Bison is a general-purpose parser generator that converts
a grammar description for an LALR context-free grammar
into a C program to parse that grammar.
Once you are proficient with Bison,
you can use it to develop a wide range of language parsers,
from those used in simple desk calculators
to complex programming languages.


Bison is upward compatible with Yacc: all properly-written Yacc grammars
ought to work with Bison with no change.
Anyone familiar with Yacc should be able to use Bison with little trouble.
You need to be fluent in C programming in order to use Bison.

Downloading Bison


GNU Bison release can be found on 
http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/bison/. 
You can also order a CD-ROM from the FSF
or use other methods
to obtain a copy.



Alpha/beta releases of Bison can be found in
ftp://alpha.gnu.org/pub/gnu/bison/, and the latest
in-development sources for Bison can always be fetched through CVS from 
:pserver:anoncvs@subversions.gnu.org:/cvsroot/bison, module
"bison", with blank password.  DO NOT use Bison sources from these
locations for production use. You can also suggest your patches to the e-mail
address bison-patches AT gnu.org.
